Santé – Friends with benefits

Clara is a typical self-made woman in her thirties. In a bright white shirt and trendy sneakers, she sits across the room. She dips a tea bag into the cup of hot water I just handed her. When the water is the right color, she starts to speak. “Because I’m single, I never actually have sex, and let me tell you, I’ve really had it with that.”

Cautiously, she takes a sip of her tea. “I just want to enjoy myself sometimes, too,” she then sighs. “How do other single people deal with that?”

A great question, because there are now more singles in the Netherlands than ever before. And well, how do they do it? Of course, people can have great sex with themselves and there are a lot of toys on the market that can provide the necessary variation. Also, a hook-up is easily arranged for many people. So even if you are single, having sex doesn’t have to be a problem.

“But I’d rather not just sleep with a strange guy,” Clara says decidedly. “Really fine if other people do that you know. I’ve done it myself sometimes. But the sex is often not too good when you don’t know each other’s bodies at all … and it feels unsafe, too, by the way.” Clara frowns and then shakes her head.

"Oh no, one night stands are not for me," she concludes though.

“Okay,” I respond, “so you prefer to have sex in a relational context, if I understand you correctly. With someone you know well and feel safe with.” Clara nods. “But you’re single now.” She nods again. “Then there are really only two options left: Continue doing what you’re doing, in other words, wait until you find a nice guy to start a relationship with so you can have sex, or…” Clara raises her eyebrows hoping I’ll come up with a better option. “Or … ask a friend if he’d be up for occasional casual sex while you’re not in a relationship yet.”

Clara suddenly exhales loudly, as if she held her breath just a little too long. “Funny that you should mention that,” she then says with relief. “You see, I have a friend with whom I’ve had sex a couple of times in the past. Back then, we both came to the conclusion that the sex was really nice, but that we weren’t relationship material for each other.” Suddenly, she starts to laugh. “I should call Willem again…!”
